Studio Glass: The 50th Year Celebration
May 11 — June 29, 2012

(Dearborn, Mich.) The University of Michigan-Dearborn proudly announces its upcoming exhibition: Studio Glass: The 50th Year Celebration, from May 11 through June 29, 2012, at The Alfred Berkowitz Gallery on the UM-Dearborn campus. The exhibition is part of a national celebration featuring 168 glass demonstrations, lectures, and exhibitions throughout the year in museums and galleries nationwide.
The exhibition spotlights studio glass art by the major artists working in the medium, including William Carlson, Dale Chihuly, Václav Cigler, Michael Glancy, Dominick Labino, Marvin Lipofsky, Harvey Littleton and Richard Ritter. All the works are from the permanent collection of The University of Michigan-Dearborn.

The American studio glass movement started with two glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art in 1962. The workshops, taught by Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for individual artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan, and in 1982, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of The University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection. Today the collection contains 306 pieces of studio glass.
The creation of this exhibition is part of the academic seminar “The Art of Glass: Objects, Techniques and the Evolution of Style,” given by Lecturer Bonita Fike during the Winter 2012 semester by UM-Dearborn’s Department of Literature, Philosophy, and the Arts. Seminar students were involved in all aspects of the exhibition’s development, including the research and writing of the accompanying catalogue.
